Simply, Darnielle is a genius. He is the best living song-writer, in my opinion. This song is off the album, Get Lonely. It can be said to take on a plethora of meanings. One being plainly about a break-up and how he cannot mentally function afterward, being alone, lost, confused, and afraid. Another goes along with his childhood (a recurring theme, seen more evidently in the album, The Sunset Tree) , and waking up without his abusive, controlling, step-father being home. I like the first scenario better, personally.

And an astronaut could have seen the hunger in my eyes from space.

Off their newest album, Romance Is Boring. I still favorite We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. Though most of their lyrics seem like a load of rubbish, they're just an overall fun band to listen to.

From Neon Bible, which is epicness in itself. This is one song I doubt I can ever memorize the lyrics to... unlike Natural Anthem by The Postal Service. I also like how the ending plays in. Probably the only song I can have on shuffle an entire day, and it will never become too bland or repetitive.

So, Ben Gibbard is one of my role models? His songs are almost always sad, though.. even if it has a 'poppish' beat, as seen in the works of The Postal Service. My favorite line of this song is debatable.
